What Is Open Enrollment and Why Should I Care About It?

For many employees, Open Enrollment can feel like a yearly hassle filled with forms, passwords, and deadlines. But it’s actually an important opportunity to make sure your benefits still meet your needs and budget.

At Morris & Garritano, our Employee Benefits Advocates are here to help make sense of it all, ensuring you have the information and support you need to make the best choices for yourself and your family.

    Understanding Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment is the annual period when you can review, compare, and select benefit plans for the coming year. It’s your chance to:

    • Evaluate healthcare needs and costs
    • Explore available plan options
    • Learn about coverage details and provider access
    • Make updates to ensure your plan still fits your life

Taking time to review your options now can lead to better coverage and potential savings throughout the year.

    Choosing the Best Option

If your circumstances have changed, such as anticipating surgery, welcoming a child, or adjusting your budget, this is the time to choose a plan that fits your new situation.

    When comparing plans, consider:

    • Premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket maximums to find the most cost-effective overall option
    • Coverage needs for expected treatments or ongoing prescriptions
    • Additional benefits, like telemedicine visits that can provide quick, low-cost care from home

Attending your employer’s Open Enrollment meeting can also help you better understand how your plan works and uncover valuable benefits you might not be using.

    Updating Your Information

Even if you’re keeping your current plan, take this time to:

    • Confirm your contact and demographic information
    • Update beneficiaries on life insurance policies
    • Review dependents listed on your coverage

    Avoiding Penalties

Missing the Open Enrollment deadline means waiting until the next period to make changes. In some states, like California, not having coverage could also result in a financial penalty.

    Special Enrollment for Life Events

While most changes must be made during Open Enrollment, certain “qualifying life events” allow updates outside of this period. These include:

    • The birth or adoption of a child
    • Marriage or divorce
    • Moving outside your current plan’s coverage area

Such events open a Special Enrollment window so you can adjust your coverage when major life changes occur.

Employer-sponsored health insurance continues to evolve as laws, economics, and healthcare needs shift. Understanding this history helps employees make better choices for the future. Learn more in The Evolution of Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance (remodelhealth.com).
