Making the Most of Medicare’s Preventive Benefits: Visits, Screenings and Vaccines
If you’re new to Medicare there are a few things you should know about the many benefits available to you!
For many people, Medicare can feel mysterious or confusing as they approach age 65. The program is structured differently from the employer-sponsored health plans most people are accustomed to, including its approach to preventive care.
The Medicare.gov website encourages use of preventive services as the best way to help you stay healthy, find health problems early, determine the most effective treatments, and prevent certain diseases. Preventive services include exams, vaccines, lab tests, and screenings. They also include programs for health monitoring, counseling, and education to help you take care of your own health. When you are new to Medicare, be sure to schedule your Welcome to Medicare visit. This is your opportunity to meet with your primary care provider to discuss your medical history, important screenings and immunizations and perhaps set lifestyle goals to ensure optimal health. This is not a comprehensive physical exam, but rather a planning session with your care provider mapping out your access to a more comprehensive health plan.
Medicare Part B also covers a Yearly “Wellness” visit with your primary care provider to create a Health Risk Assessment to help you keep your prevention plan and health goals on track. Yearly “Wellness” visits
Some vaccines are covered by Part B when administered in the Dr.’s office:
Other preventative vaccines such as Tdap, RSV and shingles are covered by your Part D Drug Prescription plan. Be sure to speak with your local pharmacist to schedule an appointment.
